Just Double It : My Ongoing Half Marathon Journey

Just Double It : My Ongoing Half Marathon Journey

Introduction

Following the positive feedback from my DIY IRONMAN blog last month, I wanted to share another enduring challenge that predates even that colossal endeavour. It all started as a simple question during the quiet solitude of the COVID-19 lockdown - could I, a novice runner inspired by necessity, run a half marathon?

The Genesis of a Streak

My journey into long-distance running began somewhat innocuously during the 2020 lockdown. With limited activities available, running offered not just escape but a challenge. Encouraged by my wife, who was becoming a more seasoned runner thanks to the gyms being closed, I started with modest 5k runs, but it was after only 4 or 5 of these before I started getting impatient and figured rather than gradually pushing to 10k I could just double the distance on my next run - how hard could it be? Despite my wife’s protests that I might be taking on too much too soon I completed my initial 10k without incident. The idea soon crystallised - why not keep doubling the distance? This led me to tackle the 21.1k half marathon distance after fewer than a dozen runs in my adult life. My initial attempt included a fair amount of walking, but I made it home without injury (beyond some pretty sore legs), and this set the stage for what would become a transformative routine.

Embracing the Challenge

The notion of running a half marathon every month began to take shape in the summer of 2022. By then, I had completed 11 half marathons, each a stepping stone that built my confidence and resilience. This monthly ritual isn’t just about physical endurance; each run serves as a moment of introspection, an opportunity to meditate on challenges and victories alike. This isn't merely a physical exercise but a mental fortitude training session, proving to myself that I can consistently overcome and achieve.

Challenges Along the Way

The path wasn’t always easy. Adverse weather, varying health, and the unpredictable ebb and flow of daily life posed constant hurdles. Yet, each challenge was met with a strategy for adaptation - be it running at dawn to escape the heat or wrapping up for icy winter jogs, to giving up on those sickly endurance nutrition gels for the altogether more palatable “Haribo”.

My standard 1/2 marathon route around the O2 and home. Maze Hill at 13km - 14km always surprises!

Memorable Moments

  • First Anniversary Run (June 2023): Circling past the O2 a year into my challenge, I marvelled at my body’s ability to allow a year of commitment to the challenge, each step a testament to my body’s resilience and my spirit’s grit. Or what my wife tells me and anyone who will listen is simply stubbornness

  • The 11th Hour Run (January 31st, 2024): A frigid pre-dawn run that tested my will against the ease of excuses, reminding me that determination often means pushing when least convenient.

  • Personal Best (July 2023): Breaking the two-hour mark was not just a physical achievement but a milestone that reaffirmed the power of persistent effort over perfect conditions.

What I've Learned

This continuous journey deepened my understanding of endurance - both physical and mental. Every run builds more than just stamina; it fortifies a deeper sense of self-belief, enhancing my ability to endure, regardless of pace.

Invitation to Join

I invite all who want to challenge themselves in a similar way to connect with me on Strava and consider joining the Personal Best Club. Set your monthly challenge, find your rhythm, and discover the vast potential of regular endurance tests. We’ll be here to help hold you to account, and be proud of your achievements so that you can celebrate everything you do, too!

Conclusion

Running a half marathon every month is a commitment that demands much but gives back exponentially in strength, resilience, and joy - even when my wife insists that I am stupid for doing it! As I face a future filled with both uncertainties and opportunities, I rely on the constant of another challenging run to propel me forward. Here’s to many more miles and shared paths ahead!

Do hard things. Celebrate everything.
